Dolores Lenore Nielson, 85, of Astoria, died last month, July 11, 2024, in Astoria.
She was born Oct. 19, 1938 in Astoria to Bernard and May Swenson.
After graduating in 1957 from Astoria High School, Dolores joined the Army, and became a WAC. She was stationed in Washington DC at the Pentagon, Ft. Ord, California, and Heidelberg, Germany while serving 4 years.
She married Kristian M. Nielson Sr. April 22, 1966. He died in 2005.
Mrs. Nielson worked various jobs throughout her life including nurses aid, cocktail waitress, and childcare provider. She enjoyed crochet, embroidery, classic movies, spending time with family; and whether rain or shine, she loved taking long daily walks in the country.
She was an active member of the Swedish VASA Astor Lodge 215, and attended Bethany Free Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Nielson is survived by a son, Martin A. Nielson of Warrenton; a daughter, Michele L. Nielson of Astoria; a stepson, Kristian M. Nielson Jr.; a stepdaughter, Tammara A. Moran of Klammath Falls; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Gerry Swenson of Astoria; Steven and Doris Swenson of Warrenton; David and Joan Swenson of Svenson; a sister Grace Dougherty of Sublimity; seven grandchildren, Brenda M West, Trevor J Altheide-Nielson, Dylan M. Altheide-Nielson, Corali K. Johnson, Carrie M. Shulmire, Mary C. Salata, and Fred C. Shulmire; eleven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sisters; Betty Gentile, Carry Swenson, and Rosalie Swenson.
A Service will be held at Bethany Free Lutheran Church on Oct. 19, 2024, in Astoria.
Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Astoria.
Memorial contributions may be made to Lower Columbia Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
