Doris was born in Strachan, Alberta, Canada to Albert and Grace Barkham on the family homestead. When she was twelve, she moved to the Portland area and graduated from Franklin High School. While in high school, she was a Rose Festival Princess. After high school she earned her college money as a welder in the ship yards building Liberty ships for the war effort.
She met her future husband, Vernon Hill, at Oregon State College. In 1944, they were married in Buffalo, New York where Vern was serving in the Army Air Corps. She and Vern raised their family in Richland, WA. In 1972, they retired to Vern's family homestead in Hamlet, OR, near Seaside. They enjoyed 66 years of marriage. Her last seven years were spent at Avamere at Seaside, where she received loving care and made many good friends.
Doris was proceeded in death by her husband Vern and grandson, Peter Hill. She is survived by her sister Millie Lindsay (Gordon) and brother Larry Meissner; her daughter Diane LeClair Neet (Donald) and son Dave Hill (Charlotte). She has five grandsons and eight great grandchildren; Samuel Hill (Justine), their daughter Eva; Andy Hill (Kari), their children Abbie and Gabe; Alan LeClair and daughter Marcelle; Nathan LeClair (Mary), sons Adam and Henry; Kevin LeClair (Sarah), sons Evan and Jack. Doris has numerous nieces, nephews, cousins in both the U.S. and Canada.
Doris will be remembered for her kind and gentle spirit. She always had a smile and time for people. She was sensitive to others feelings and needs. She dearly loved her family and friends and they loved her. Now she is freed from her dementia and cancer, rejoicing at the feet of her Savior.
A memorial service will be held at the Cannon Beach Community Church, 132 E. Washington Street, 97110 on April 15 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to Lower Columbia Hospice, 2111 Exchange St, Astoria, OR 97103 or Cannon Beach Community Church.
