Dorothy Mae Johnson, 101, long-time resident of Naselle, Washington died on August 16, 2024.
Dorothy was born in Louisville, Kentucky to Jacob and Mattie Gruner. Dorothy attended Henry Manly Junior High prior to attending Peniel Bible Institute in Campton, Kentucky where she earned a Diploma of Graduation on April 19, 1940. She worked in an office before she met Harvey Johnson, Sr. at her church. Dorothy accepted his marriage proposal and a move to Naselle. The couple were married in Louisville on April 11, 1946, moving to Naselle on July 2, 1946. Dorothy peeled bark, picked berries and babysat as she raised her family. In 1965, she attended classes at Naselle High School and earned a high school diploma on June 3, 1966. She continued her education at Lower Columbia College in Longview, Washington until she was hired as a telephone operator at Western Wahkiakum Telephone Company. Of her 24-year career at the telephone company, she was a supervisor for the last 8 years until the need for operators was eliminated. Dorothy was an active member of Naselle Assembly of God where she served in many different capacities in the Sunday School and church activities. Throughout the years, Dorothy was known to her family and friends as a faithful prayer warrior for family, friends, community and missionaries across the world. Dorothy was a wonderful hostess as she entertained with dinners, impromptu waffle breakfasts (when there was snow), and hearty meals for visiting college students. In later years, she enjoyed lunch and visits with the ladies at Friday Club. Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Harvey Johnson, Sr. Dorothy is survived by her son Harvey Johnson Jr. (Jeannine), and daughter Jeanette Johnson (Bill Grimberg); three grandchildren, Luke Johnson (Madison), Lindsay Littau (Brian Hyland), and David Grimberg; six great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. Dorothy is also survived by her brother, Dr. LeRoy Gruner residing in the Dominican Republic. A Memorial will be held at Naselle Assembly of God on August 31, 2024 at 2:00 pm. A cake and coffee reception will follow.
