Herbert Mathews "Butch" Olson, 69, of Astoria, Oregon, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Feb. 9, 2016 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Herb was born in Astoria, Oregon, on Feb 9, 1947, to Oscar Herbert Olson and Rauha Maria (Hundis) Olson. He was raised in Astoria, Oregon, and Rosburg, Washington. He attended Rosburg Elementary, John Jacob Astor Elementary, and Astoria High School, where he graduated in the class of 1965. He was a member of the Oregon National Guard. On Oct. 22, 1966, he married Marie Jean Footh in Naselle, Washington. They lived in Astoria. He worked for Carl Mead doing upholstery, was a carpet installer, and worked for 22 years designing and cutting monuments at Astoria Granite. Most of his life he lived in Astoria, and he was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Eagle Lodge, American Legion, Moose Lodge and Astoria Jaycees. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing racquetball and golf, clam digging, attending Astoria sports and band concerts and planning class reunions for his class of 1965. He was also active in the Boy Scouts. Survivors include his wife of 49 years Mary Olson; a daughter and son in law, Connie Dubb and Michael Dubb of Astoria; a son, Brian Olson of Astoria; a grandson, Tim Smith, and great-grandsons Nolan and Jaxon, of Walla Walla, Washington, a granddaughter, Jessica Strecker and her husband, James Strecker, of Eugene, Oregon; a grandson, Matthew Nokelby of Battle Ground, Washington; a grandson Mitchell Kemp-Olson of Warrenton, Oregon; a brother, Clifford Hargand and his wife , Karen, of Warrenton, Oregon; a sister, Frieda Footh and her husband, John Footh, of Grays River, Washington; and a sister-in-law, Rosie Smalley Hargand of Desert Hot springs, California. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and many family members, and friends, and friends who are family. He will be forever loved and missed by all who knew him. Herb was a generous, loyal and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, with an amazing spark in his life. He was preceded in death by Oscar Herbert Olson (father) and Rauha Maria Olson(mother); Fred L. Hargand(brother) and his wife, Joyce; and Robert A. Hargand(brother). A public graveside service is being held at 2 p.m. at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton. A celebration of life is at 3:30 p.m. at the Astoria Elks Ballroomm. Please wear a Hawaiian shirt.
