Lois L Erickson

September 11, 1919 — December 26, 2013

Lois L Erickson - September 11, 1919 to December 26, 2013 Lois Laberta Hoagland was born September 11, 1919 in Bassano, Alberta, Canada. She graduated from Red Deer High School before moving with her parents to Oregon. She attended business school in Astoria, Oregon and worked in the offices of the Albany Democrat Herald, the Coos Bay Times, the Burlington Vermont Daily News, and The Portland Oregonian. She and her son and daughter moved from Portland to Boring, Oregon in 1956 when she married Carl Erickson. She became a top-selling Watkins saleslady in Clackamas making deliveries in her pink Rambler. Carl and Lois retired to Panther Creek near Otis, Oregon in 1974 where she taught and practiced art fulltime in and around the Lincoln City area. She moved to Warrenton, Oregon in 1998 following Carl's death. The matriarch of the Hoagland family of Astoria, Oregon, she is predeceased by parents William J and Anna Mae Hoagland, brothers Ray, Rex, and Robert Hoagland, and husband Carl D. Erickson. Always a very creative person, her passion in life was her artwork, especially watercolor. She taught watercolor, calligraphy, oriental brush, and drawing classes. In addition, she did greeting card and other artistic classes with seniors at community centers or through community colleges. She was a member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon. She loved living at the Oregon coast and drove her Volkswagon Vanagon to scenic spots throughout the Oregon coast taking pictures and painting. She will be remembered by her daughter for all she did to make life special for family members and all of her many friends and students. She was always trying new things: the latest recipes, the designing of the family's Boring, Oregon home, supervising as well as doing a major part of the remodeling and the pictures, artwork, and crafts within the home. She made family birthdays, holidays, and outings into unique celebrations and always captured the day with photos. Her artistic greeting cards are highly treasured. She leaves a legacy of artwork in many homes and businesses and in the hearts of numerous artists with whom she has shared her passion for art. Lois is survived by her two children and their spouses: Timothy (JoEllen) Nolan of Salem, Oregon and Sheila Nolan (Bill DeJager) of Birkenfeld, Oregon. She is lovingly remembered by two granddaughters, Debby (Dan) Brett and Diane (Glenn) Webb, and three great-granddaughters, Daphne and Darcy Brett and Nancy Webb. A celebration of Lois Erickson's life and art will be held on Sunday May 11, 2014 from 1pm to 4pm at Trails End Art Association in Gearhart, Oregon.
