Margaret (Peggy) Field March 19, 1939 -October 6, 2024

Margaret (Peggy) Mayhew Field passed away on October 6, 2024 in Astoria, Oregon after years of heart and other health complications. Peggy was known for her thoughtfulness, letter writing, and love of antiques and “a good bargain”.

Peggy was born on March 19, 1939 in Plymouth, Wisconsin to Wilber and Erna Mayhew. She received her Science Education degree from University of Wisconsin in 1961. It was there she met her husband, Richard (Dick) Field, and they were married on April 14, 1962. Richard’s work with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) moved them to Lexington, KY, Cincinnati, OH, Raliegh, NC and finally to Corvallis, OR in 1972 where they built life-long friends and lived until they both retired.

Peggy taught at Corvallis High School in the Learning Center from 1980-to her retirement in 1997. Peggy was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and the OSU Thrift Shop in Corvallis. Peggy and Dick moved to Clatskanie in 2004 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. There they fell in love with retired life on the river, watching the ships and wildlife right from their living room. They had wonderful neighbors in the River Ranch community, many of whom supported Peggy almost daily, allowing her to stay in her home until this past June.

Peggy was proceeded in death by her husband Richard (2010), brother Gary Mayhew (2009) and sister Jane Franz (2021). Peggy is survived by her younger brother, Allan (Butch) Mayhew of Plymouth, WI, her son, Peter Field of Astoria, OR, her daughter Rebecca Field of Beaverton, OR and her grandchildren Shirlee, Madison and Judd Field, all current students at OSU.

Peggy’s ashes will be laid to rest next to her husband in Berlin, MA. A family service will be held in Plymouth, Wisconsin in the Spring of 2025 (date TBD). A small gathering of family is planned to be held in 2024 at her home in Clatskanie, OR. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to: Corvallis Community Thrift Shop (formerly the OSU Thrift Shop)
