Raymond Andrew Tynkila was born on February 22, 1923, in Aberdeen, Washington, and died on August 17, 2024, in Astoria, Oregon, at the age of 101. He spent most of his youth living in Finland with his father Oskar before his passing from cancer. Ray returned to the United States at 15 and settled in Aberdeen, Washington, with his Aunt and Uncle. During World War II he fought with the United States Coast Guard in the Pacific Theater before being honorably discharged. He would later tell family the moment in his life he was both the most proud of and the most scared was landing Guam.
After the war, Ray returned to Finland to propose and marry his childhood sweetheart Verna. They moved to the United States shortly after marrying and settled in Aberdeen, Washington, then Astoria, Oregon. For many years Ray worked at the plywood mill before he and Verna bought land and built their own farm which they ran for over 40 years. They had three children; Diana, William and Bee and were married for 67 years before Verna passed away in 2013. Ray always called Verna the ‘love of his life’ and until his last days would happily share stories of their time together.
Ray dedicated his life to work and family, putting nothing else before ensuring those he loved were taken care of. A consummate host, with Verna, he loved to entertain friends and family, and was an incredible storyteller. Ray loved to travel around the world with Verna, spending time in Europe and RVing across the United States more than once. In 2014, he returned to Finland with his grandson Jason visiting friends and family across the country. For his 100th birthday he was joined by his entire family and many friends to celebrate in his home.
We also remember family who left us before Ray, his beloved wife Verna, his daughter Diana, granddaughter JoAnn, and his grandson Jason. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Nancy Tynkila, his daughter and son-in-law, Bee and David Bononcini, his grandchildren Lucas Tynkila, Briana Bononcini and Deems Bononcini, as well as eight great-grandchildren. He was an incredible husband, father and grandfather and will always be remembered as such. The family wishes to share an extra thanks to Astor Place who helped care for Ray in his last months, Anne Stickel, and a very special thank you to Marjo Dunagan who took such exceptional care of Ray and Verna in their final years. A private service will be held in the near future. Hughes-Ransom is in charge of the arrangements.
