Shirley A. Powers
Shirley Ann (Martin) Powers, 81, of Warrenton, OR passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2024.
She was born in Salt Lake City, UT on November 1, 1942, the daughter of Therman and Mrytle
Martin.
Shirley grew up in Hermiston, OR, graduating from Hermiston High School in 1960. She
obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education in 1967 and Master’s Degree in
Elementary Curriculum in 1977, both from University of Oregon in Eugene.
She taught school for grades K-6 in Oregon and California. She married Clarke Powers in 1977
in Fort Worth, Texas. Since her husband was an US Air Force officer, they lived throughout the
U.S. and in Europe, raising two children.
She was an avid sewer since childhood, learning from her grandmother. She sewed some of her
own clothes, along with her children’s in their early years. She made many gifts to include rugs,
kitchen items, and wall decorations She enjoyed camping and seeing the US in a motorhome.
She was active in Red Hatters, Methodist Women, bridge, and pinnacle groups.
In her retirement years, Shirley lived in Warrenton, OR. She is survived by her husband, Clarke
W. Powers, her son Clarke “Cory” Powers, her daughter Sheri (Powers) Gabor, and her grandson
Michael E. Gabor.
Arrangements were made by Hughes-Ransom Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Astoria,
OR. Her burial is in Arapahoe Cemetery in Arapahoe, Nebraska with her mother’s family, per
her wishes.
